How to define your brand voice in one afternoon
A simple, practical exercise to define your brand voice in a few hours, so every post, caption and reply sounds like you.
Your brand voice is the personality in your words. It’s why some brands feel warm, some feel bold and some feel calm. You don’t need a big project to define it. An afternoon is enough to start.
Step 1: Describe your brand as a person
If your brand walked into a room, how would it talk? Friendly and chatty? Calm and expert? Witty and quick? Write a few sentences.
Step 2: Pick three words
Choose three words for how you sound, like “warm, clear, playful”.
Step 3: Add what you’re not
For each word, write what it shouldn’t become. Warm, not sugary. Clear, not boring. Playful, not silly. This keeps the voice on track.
Step 4: Write some examples
Rewrite three things in your new voice: your Instagram bio, a product description and a reply to a customer question. Seeing it in action makes it real.
Step 5: Make a word list
List words and phrases you love using, and ones you’ll avoid.
Step 6: Share it
Put it all on one page and share it with anyone who writes for your brand. Consistency is what makes a voice recognisable.
