Meta ads for small businesses: a beginner’s guide
A plain-English guide to running Meta ads on Facebook and Instagram: objectives, audiences, creatives, budgets and tracking.
Meta ads let you show ads on Facebook and Instagram to the people most likely to care. They can work really well for small businesses, especially when the basics are set up properly.
Boost a post, or use Ads Manager?
The “Boost” button is quick, but it gives you limited control. Meta Ads Manager lets you choose your goal, your audience, your budget and your creatives properly. If you’re spending real money, use Ads Manager.
How a campaign is structured
- Campaign: where you choose your objective.
- Ad set: where you choose your audience, budget, schedule and placements.
- Ad: the actual image or video, text and button people see.
Choose the right objective
Meta groups objectives into a few types: awareness, traffic, engagement, leads, app promotion and sales. Pick the one that matches what you want. If you want enquiries, a leads campaign will usually beat a traffic campaign, because Meta optimises for the action you choose.
Find the right audience
- Core audiences: people chosen by location, age, interests and behaviour. Great for a local business in Bengaluru, for example.
- Custom audiences: people who already know you, like website visitors, Instagram engagers or your customer list.
- Lookalike audiences: new people who are similar to your best customers.
Retargeting, showing ads to people who visited your site or engaged with your page, is often where small budgets work hardest.
Creative is half the battle
Your ad is competing with friends’ posts and Reels. Ads that look native to the feed, with vertical video, a strong hook in the first second and a clear offer, tend to do better than polished brochures. Test two or three different creatives in each ad set and let the results decide.
Budget: start small, stay patient
Start with a budget you’re comfortable testing with, and give campaigns time to learn before judging them. Changing everything every day makes it hard to learn anything at all.
Track everything
Set up the Meta Pixel and, ideally, the Conversions API on your website, so you can see which ads lead to enquiries and sales. Add UTM tags to your links so your website analytics can tell you the same story.
A quick checklist before you launch
- The objective matches your goal, like leads or sales.
- Your audience matches where your customers are.
- You’re testing two or three different creatives.
- Your landing page is fast and clear.
- Tracking is set up, so you can see what’s working.
